12 Things You Should Know About Therapy…
Unfortunately, therapy still tends to be a very taboo topic for many people. You may be surprised how many people from all lifestyles: rich, poor, educated, and working class, think that therapy is for “crazy people’’. As someone who has been to both couples and individual counselling, I can relate to how going into an office, or now logging onto a video chat, and explaining all of your insecurities, trauma, and self-destructive cycles to a stranger can be very intimidating and uncomfortable. It is undeniably difficult to open up your heart and be vulnerable and transparent about your mistakes and wounds. See, us therapists go to therapy too! I know what it is like to sit on a couch and look across the room at a woman with a notepad and think to myself…. “How am I going to explain this to her?”
I also know what it is like to be the woman with the note pad. Personally, I think many people enter the world of mental health because they know what it is like to struggle and have empathy for others in the same position. Even psychologists and psychiatrists have a story to tell, we are just as wounded as the rest of the world. In my case, I really enjoy helping people and human behaviour fascinates me. It is such an honour to share my academic and personal knowledge to support others as they heal. I like to use what I learned from healing my own emotional bumps and bruises to help…
