Narcissists in the workplace can be incredibly damaging to both our professional and personal lives. They use their charisma and manipulation tactics to get ahead, but they often leave a trail of destruction in their wake. In order to protect ourselves from their toxic behaviour, it’s important to understand their tactics and have a strategic plan in place, so you can act professionally while taking your power back.

Here are 7 professional ways to protect yourself from narcissists in the workplace.

  1. Set clear boundaries: It’s important to establish and maintain healthy boundaries in your relationships, including those in the workplace. For example, if a narcissistic colleague constantly interrupts you in meetings, you can politely but firmly remind them that you need to finish your thoughts.
  2. Document everything: Keeping records of interactions with a narcissistic colleague or boss can help protect you from false accusations and provide evidence of their behaviour if necessary. For instance, keeping an email trail of conversations and decisions can be helpful in the future.
