Toxic relationships can be incredibly damaging, and when a partner is Autistic, has ADHD, ADD or is dyslexic, the relationship can be even more challenging. Narcissism is a personality disorder characterised by excessive self-importance, a lack of empathy, and a tendency to exploit others. While not all neurodivergent individuals will have a narcissistic personality disorder, some may display narcissistic traits.

Here are five facts that could indicate your narcissistic partner may be neurodivergent.

  1. Difficulty with empathy: Narcissists often have difficulty understanding and sharing the feelings of others, and this can be heightened in neurodivergent individuals. Studies have shown that individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) have reduced activation in brain regions associated with empathy, such as the anterior cingulate cortex.
  2. Lack of self-awareness: Narcissists tend to lack insight into their own behaviour and its impact on others, and this can be even more pronounced in neurodivergent individuals. Research suggests that neurodivergent individuals may have difficulty with metacognition or thinking about their own thinking.
