Having a narcissistic mother can potentially groom you for a narcissistic or toxic relationship. This is because growing up with a narcissistic mother can impact how you view yourself, others, and relationships. Children of narcissistic mothers may have learned to prioritise their mother’s needs and desires over their own, leading to a lack of healthy boundaries and difficulty asserting themselves in relationships. They may also have developed a skewed understanding of healthy relationships, as their mother’s behaviour may have normalised controlling, manipulative, or abusive behaviour.

Furthermore, a person’s experience with a narcissistic mother can impact their attachment style and ability to form healthy relationships in the future. For example, some may develop an anxious attachment style, where they crave closeness but fear abandonment, while others may develop an avoidant attachment style, where they avoid intimacy altogether. These attachment styles can make it challenging to form healthy, balanced relationships.
