The Communal Narcissists, The Good Doing Devils
As more and more people are researching, reporting, and sharing their personal stories about narcissism, we are starting to realize that narcissism comes in multiple forms. There is diversity in the presentation of traits in people who are high on the pathological narcissism spectrum and there could also be comorbidity with other mental health conditions that make them present differently too. There are still some hallmark traits that are very common in most narcissists, such as the need for supply and outside validation. Supply and outside validation does not always need to be or come from a gorgeous mate or luxury car. Working in politics, heading a community organization, leading a church, or directing a charity can do this just as well as a blonde model girlfriend or a Rolls-Royce for the communal narcissists!
What are communal narcissists? I like to think of them as good doing devils and I like to think that I probably lived with one for a few years! The communal narcissist gets their fragile ego stroked by being seen as the self-sacrificing hero, the saviour, the rescuer, or the martyr. They are the ones who will build a community centre, raise money for charity, preach in church, and always be willing to help out, especially if there will be a photo shoot to document their good deeds afterwards.
