Why Do Narcissist Sabotage Your Success?
The waters are calm, you think things have taken a turn for the better, and something important or good in your life is about to happen…. Maybe you have to take a big exam, you have an interview for your dream job, your family is visiting from out of town, or it’s the holiday party at work and then, the narcissist does it again, they ruin it! They decide to break up with you, have a tantrum, get “sick”, don’t show up, or do something awful to embarrass you. Just when you were starting to feel like they were changing, they do something unforgivable that rains on your parade. Does this sound familiar?
It sounds very familiar to me. The day before defending my thesis, my then “live in narcissist” decided to break up with me and tell me that he never loved me at all, he was just acting. This was very confusing to me because only a few days before he was talking about marriage and purchasing a home together. Of course, he knew how nervous I was and how important the defence was to me, and just to make things a little bit more difficult, he decided to throw a monkey wrench into my already emotionally charged day. And in typical narcissist style, a few days later he was very sorry and reappeared.
I have heard countless stories from survivors and clients that are similar and equally as painful, some way worse. How can narcissists be so cold and selfish…
