Why Makeup And Shoes Are Good For Your Mental Health…
Now before you go on to assume that I am a very shallow and superficial therapist, I must confess that I was trying to invent a catchy title to grab your attention…. but there really is a lot of truth to the idea behind my essay. When we look better, we feel better.
Now I do believe that meaningful things like travel, experiences, physical activity, spirituality, nature, and human connection overtime can make significant positive changes to our mental health and overall wellbeing. These things will go much deeper and alter your self- concept and mood in a more positive way than shoes and makeup ever will. Unfortunately, it takes a great deal of energy, time, and sometimes funds to take advantage of those more abstract concepts and mental health interventions. Sometimes you need a smaller scale intervention to start with to spark change.
If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, addiction, or other mental health conditions sometimes just getting out of bed is a struggle. I understand that. Going for a hike and meditating on top of a picturesque snow-capped mountain can just seem unachievable, foolish, and unrealistic when you are feeling low or stressed.
